Gladstone Road School

Gladstone School 1907 - one year after its construction

Built in the early 20th century the school buildings on Gladstone Road have hosted an infant and junior school as well as several other secondary schools eg the Girls Grammar School and the boys Senior School
I attended the infant and then junior school from 1962 to 1968. Members of staff that I can remember from the time were the Head Teachers - Miss Hare/Mrs Morgan in the infants school and Mr Roberts in the junior school. The only teacher I can remember from infants is Mrs Williams who later taught at Romilly Infants. In the junior school I was taught by Mr Henshaw, Miss Hall (for two years) and finally Mr Mills - a real gentleman. Other junior school teachers at the time were Mrs Evans - who taught the choir, Mr Jones, Mr Moore - who always wanted to join in with the football games in the yard, Miss Jones who played the piano and Mr Edmunds.
One unpleasant memory is the dining rooms and kitchens - I was made to take school dinners when I first went to school but the smell of the cooking and the lumps in the mashed potatoes would induce nausea and I could eat very little - most days nothing at all. My parents stopped sending me when they realised that they were paying 2s 6d a week for me to keep my weight down when everybody knows you can starve a kid for nothing
