Anne's Winning Poem - The Black Void
Fireballs hurtling through the cloud of stardust
Floating like a shroud;
Silence, sinister; cold, unfeeling,
Objects racing, spinning, reeling.
Meteorites of golden red,
Shoot from the furnace straight ahead.
The blazing furnace; only one -
The burning, clutching, writhing sun!
On planets dark, so cold and friendless
Stretch icy mists so leering; endless
Lurking monsters fierce; eyes glazed in
Wondering at the blackest maze.
Shooting stars so wildly career, breaking
Up the atmosphere.
Luminous clouds of glowing white;
Blacker than black on the blackest night!
For so long man has tried in vain
Knowledge of the universe to gain,
But some day, and it will be soon,
Man will build cities on the moon.
